On September 17, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., the Local Development Corporation of Crown Heights, SKA Marin and
LWC Management Corp. will celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the rehabilitation of David Chavis Apartments,
a senior citizens apartment building. located at 230 Kingston Avenue in
Brooklyn, NY
This senior housing was built in 1982 under the sponsorship of
First Baptist Church of Crown Heights, Reverend Clarence Norman, Sr.,
senior pastor. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provided the original mortgage.
The renovation started in December 2006 and ended in October 2007.
The commercial space was completely rehabilitated, is leased to Builders
for Family and Youth, an affiliate of Catholic Charities for use by the St. Louis Senior Center. The tenants received new stoves, refrigerators, bathtubs and kitchen cabinets. The building’s two elevators were replaced, as were its boiler system, hot water system, windows, and doors to the entrance of the building. The facade under the windows were replaced and the air conditioner sleeves. These repairs serve to enhance the living standards of the senior’s and the appearance of the building.
Funding for this major rehabilitation was supplied by Citibank,
MMA Financial, NYC Housing Development Corporation (HDC),
NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), NYS Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The rehabilitation of the David Chavis Apartments has improved
the seniors’ living environment as well as the community.
The Local Development Corporation of Crown Heights wishes to show
